A record number of countries will contend for the five spots in the best foreign language film category in January. Costa Rica, Fiji, and Iraq are first-time submitters. I've seen only one film on the list, Singapore's
Be with Me, and heard significant buzz about only one other: Palestine's
Paradise Now, a tense dramatization of suicide bombers' last 48 hours. It has been getting much press since its splash in Toronto. Of note: both Be with Me and Paradise Now weld fiction and reality into a narrative, more so than your typical film.

1 comment:
I have seen the following:
- Be With Me, Singapore (you know what I think)
- Caribe, Costa Rica (UGH!!! -- then again, should we expect better film from Central America?)
I have seen clips/under 15 minutes of the following:
- Paradise Now, Palestine (but what a great 10 minutes!)
- Days of Santiago, Peru (interestingly good for a Peruvian film -- very popular as well)
I have heard good things about the following from Telluride:
- The Child, Belgium
- Fateless, Hungary
I am curious because I know previous work by:
- El Aura, Argentina (Bielinsky did Nine Queens)
- The Promise, China (Kaige did Farewell My Concubine)
- Sex & Philosophy, Tajikstan (Makhmalbaf did one of my favorite Iranian films, Gabbeh)
I am curous because wtf?!:
- The Land Has Eyes, Fiji
- Renart the Fox, Luxembourg
