I know I said no more Oscars...

...but something set to be published tomorrow bothers me. [But first, to sum up: reaction to Brokeback's loss has been both blindly constructive and resoundingly destructive (and somewhat amusing). Pitiless tirades against (and defenses of) the Academy's choice have been issued by the literati, even by Los Angelites like Ken Turan and Steve Lopez.] But what do you think of Brokeback author Annie Proulx's bitter rant? I find it sad and disturbing that this writer's mood is fouled by a Hollywood fart.

Annie got a lot more love here than she did for the Shipping News...that's for sure.

I also find it interesting that Proulx finds room to go after the actors who mimic icons and reap gold, like PSH (and Foxx, etc). I harbor a similar criticism.

Between Proulx's tirade (almost as long as the original short story of "Brokeback" itself), and McMurtry's comment that "America doesn't want their cowboys to be gay", you would think the "Brokeback" camp were completely unsatisfied with it's three Academy Awards, four BAFTAs, a DGA award, four Golden Globes, two Independent Spirits (which Proulx herself lauds), the Golden Lion, the WGA award, an award from every other film organization worthy of an acronym, and a box office that exceeds $75 million, all for a film that was shot for $14 million and plastered into the nation's identity for the last 5 months. To call them "Sore Losers" would be lenient.
